The Trent-Severn Trail Town Program is an initiative of Kawarthas Northumberland in partnership with Parks Canada, Kawartha Lakes, Peterborough & the Kawarthas and Northumberland County.
Rosedale, a Trent Severn Waterway Trail Town and the Gateway to Balsam Lake, is located at the highest elevation of the Trent-Severn Waterway on the east shore of Balsam Lake. This small community straddles the river, with commerce on both sides. Before written history, this site was a Summer Campground for Native Fishing parties. It has also been a stopping ground since Europeans started to explore the hinterlands- Samuel de Champlain travelled this river, through what is now Rosedale, four times in 1615 and 1616!
Lock 35, Rosedale, is just east of the hamlet. It serves the boating community well by offering significant dockage and O-TenTik’s, a cabin and campsites. They offer a small dock for kayaks and canoes when renting a site. The facilities include a shower and wheelchair assessible washrooms, an ice machine and firewood. Adjacent to the lock is the Dewey’s Island Nature Reserve with a small trail system. A walking trail to the Hamlet of Rosedale is easily accessed by either side of the canal.
There are two marinas on the Canal, which offer gas, pumpouts, boating supplies and ice cream. Rosedale Marina is a full service marina which offers some transient slips, showers and rental boats as well. This is the last gas westbound for 40km (Bolsover) and 12 km eastbound (Fenelon River)
Highway 35 crosses the Canal at the mouth of the Otonobee (Rosedale/Trent/Gull) River. On the north side is a dock for day use and a pretty Parkette maintained by the community for day use featuring picnic tables, BBQ stands and a privy (during boating season). It’s a great place to start your trail, either by boat, hiking or cycling. There is ample parking and a boat launch ramp. There are several resorts/motels nearby, a gas station on the highway, a restaurant, two takeout places and some shopping available. The community is also served by an Anglican Church through July and August (services at 9am). A directory of all nearby services is posted at the Parkette.
The local walking or cycling trails currently wind through the shaded cottage roads and along both sides of the canal. They are mostly flat routes, ranging from .7 km to 6 km’s. The Haliburton Rail Trail is 12 kms away, most of it on country roads with some highway riding (4km). Rosedale is a stop on the City of Kawartha Lakes Arts and Heritage Trail. This is a driving trail, named ‘Farm to Shield’ (orange trail) which covers 62 kms, encompassing other Trail Towns: Bobcaygeon and Coboconk, where among other sights, Artist Flags are flown. Visit explorekawarthaslakes.com. Rosedale is also part of the Bee Pollinator Pathway, utilizing the Parkette’s Native Species Garden, encouraging a long term Bee habitat.
